FAQ

Some Commonly Asked Questions:
Q. Where is Belize?

A. Belize is located on the southern Yucatan Peninsula, bordering Mexico on the north and Guatemala on the south and west. Although it possesses many "Caribbean Islands", Belize is a mainland country, and acts as a doorway between Latin and Caribbean cultures.

Q. How do I get there?

A. Though some intrepid travelers do make the long drive through Mexico, most choose to fly. Belize is only about a 2 hour flight from Miami and other major hubs in the southern United States. Check with your travel agent for the best fares and schedules.

Q. How do I get from the airport to the resort... should I rent a car?
A. We do not recommend that you rent a car. The roads in Belize are not well maintained, are poorly marked and generally dangerous to anyone not familiar with the driving here. Our Drivers and Guides are accustomed to the many one-lane bridges, speed bumps, potholes and other hazards, and can assure you of a safe and comfortable arrival.

Maya Kingdom Adventures and Belize Jungle Lodge is located in the Jungle Forest of Northern Belize, on the entrance road to the Altun Ha Mayan Ruins; just 20 Miles from the International Airport, and only 32 miles north of Belize City. It is easily accessible by Taxi and regular (daily) Bus Service.

Executive pick-up at International is available by your request.

To reach Maya Kingdom Resort, we recommend that you take a Taxi from Phillip Goldson International, for the 20 mile trip to our resort near Altun Ha.

Executive pick-up at International is available by your request.

Q. Do I need to secure a passport to enter Belize?

A. The short answer... YES. No one can enter Belize without a valid passport. Citizens of countries other than the US, Canada and western Europe, may be required an entrance VISA. Check to be sure that you have the necessary documents, before your departure.

Q. Is the water safe to drink?
A. Yes, the municipal water in Belize is safe to drink, however the "chemistry" of the water may be different from the water you drink at home. Bottled water is available at all of our resorts, by your request.

Q. Is it safe to travel in Belize?
A. Yes, Belize is very safe... one of the most peaceful places on the planet. But like anywhere else, you have to use common sense. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or putting your trust in people you don't know, can get you in trouble anywhere... even in the US, Canada or the UK! Don't go out alone, don't walk the streets at night, and stay with people you know, and you will be fine.

Q. Are there many bugs? A. No more than most other places. Mosquitos and Gnats are not generally a problem, though we do have seasonal "hatches" when they can be more abundant. Anywhere outdoors (even near the Arctic) it is advisable to wear an insect repellent containing DEET, to protect your skin from biting bugs.

Our rooms are regularly exterminated, however occasional creepy-crawly critters do get in... this is after all, a wild and unspoiled country, filled with wildlife. So if any of this unwanted "wildlife" invades your space, you have our permission to dispatch it, by all means necessary!

Q. What is the climate like in Belize?
A. The climate is very similar to southern Florida... perhaps a bit warmer. As in Florida, easterly trade-winds prevail, with a fresh sea breeze every day. November through March are our windiest months. June through September is PRIME DIVING TIME, with our lightest winds and calmest seas. When is the "best time" to come to Belize? Anytime you can!

Q. Can I speak English in Belize?
A. Yes. Though Belize is an incredible "melting pot" of different cultures and languages, ENGLISH is the official language, and is understood and spoken by most Belizeans.

Q. Do I need to exchange money?
A. US Dollars are widely accepted almost everywhere in Belize, at a rate of 2 Belize Dollars for 1 US Dollar. Other non-Belizean currencies must be exchanged at the bank.

Q. Can I use my ATM card?
A. Yes, all banks in major cities have ATM machines, and will accept your bank card, or credit card for cash advances.

Q. What should I bring with me?
A. Much of what you will need for your Belize Adventures, we can provide here. But some items you may wish to bring would include Dive Gear: even though we have dive and snorkel gear available, if you are a SERIOUS DIVER you may wish to bring your own, to assure a proper fit. The same applies to fishing gear; even though we have a wide variety of fishing equipment and lures available, you may (for personal reasons) wish to bring your own.

A list of items you should definitely pack would include: Hat, Sunglasses (Polarized), sturdy Walking Shoes or Boots, Long Pants and Long-sleeve Shirt (both for sunburn and jungle protection), Swimsuit, Binoculars, Camera, Flashlight, Sunscreen, Insect Repellent (DEET), and any personal items you may need. If you wear eyeglasses or contacts, you should consider carrying a "spare pair"... just in case.
