Marine LifeFrom the brackish estuaries and river mouths, and mangrove lined coastal lagoons where great silver Tarpon roll and Snook and Snapper lurk in the dark shadows of the oyster encrusted tree roots; to the shallow island grass flats where the Ghosts of Bonefish flicker over the sand and rocket-like Barracuda with toothy jaws wait for an easy meal... where upside-down Jellyfish and moss-covered Conch Shells litter the grass... Belize is a living laboratory of marine creatures. Few places on earth can rival our incredible Barrier Reef, for shear magnitude of rainbow-hued life.Spiritwind Reef Resort maintains a 10 acre private coral and mangrove island, as a marine and wildlife sanctuary, located at famous Tobacco Reef. Noted for it's variety of life, Tobacco Reef has been touted as having the greatest bio-diversity of any place in the Caribbean. Our island (part of Tobacco Range) is a unique habitat, with both coral reef and mangrove forests... home of Manatees and American Crocodiles. We hold regular EDUCATIONAL MARINE ECOLOGY WORKSHOPS at the island and reef, to collect, identify and study a wide variety of marine plants and animals. Fish collecting and handling lessons included. An outstanding adventure for the whole family. Click ADVENTURES for schedules and prices. |

![]() ![]() | Manatee WatchEvery Friday (weather permitting) our boats head north of Spiritwind Reef Resort to the seaside village of Gales Point, for the weekly "Manatee Watch". These gentle "cows" of the sea can be seen peacefully munching on beds of seagrass which grow in the lagoon. Getting up close and personal with one of these enormous marine mammals is a special experience. This large mangrove lagoon is a biologically rich environment, with many species of fish inhabiting its mangrove shorelines. Keep a sharp eye on the shallows. You may catch a glimpse of a spotted Eagle Ray, silvery Tarpon or large Snook running ahead of the boat. And don't forget to look up as well. These mangrove trees are filled with Orchids, Tilandsias and other epiphytic plants, as well as Parrots and countless other species of birds. You may even see the fabled Wish-willy (Spiny Iguana) lounging about in the sun. Don't forget your camera! This is an easy, fun and educational adventure suitable for the entire family.
