Paddle SportsSpiritwind Reef Resort offers several excellent Paddling Adventures, for enthusiasts of all skill levels. Our location on the beautiful Dangriga River (North Stann Creek) gives us easy access to both river and sea kayaking and canoeing. You can spend the morning, or the entire day exploring beautiful and wild Gra Gra Lagoon. Just 2 miles south of Spiritwind Reef Resort, this pristine saltwater lagoon is a precious natural jewel on the coast of Belize. It is a lush mangrove habitat filled with Birds of all kinds, Manatees, Crocodiles and Fish of every description. The value of these red, black and white mangroves trees cannot be overstated, as they are the "nursery" of the sea. The sheltering roots of these amazing trees provide for an ecosystem, perhaps as varied as the reef itself. Studies have shown that (at least) 75% of all marine fish species spend some part of their life-cycles in the "Mangrove Swamps" of the coastal lagoons. The Gra Gra Lagoon paddle is an outstanding educational adventure for the entire family. If your heart is calling for a greater challenge, you may enjoy our Stann Creek Valley Expedition. This incredible family adventure begins early in the morning at the village of Pamona, in the Stann Creek Valley. From there you paddle (20 miles) downstream past farms, groves, and miles of un-spoiled Jungle. You may see rainbow-hued Butterflies, noisy but beautiful Amazon Parrots, Toucans (our national bird), Green Iguanas, Howler Monkeys... perhaps even an elusive Otter Cat, or shy Tapir (our national animal). By early evening, you will arrive back at Spiritwind Reef Resort... tired but invigorated, and just in time for a hearty dinner. Still need more adventure? How about our "Eyes of Night" Crocodile and Wildlife watch. They say there is nothing in the darkness of night, which is not there in the light of day. We are not sure that you will agree, after you have paddled Stann Creek AT NIGHT, illuminating the lush banks of the river with your headlight. The fact is that MOST jungle animals sleep during the heat of the day, emerging only after sunset. You may see the hot red eyes of Crocodiles, as they hunt along the riverbank for prey. Boa Constrictors and other snakes are most active at night, along with Peccary, Deer, Tapir, Ocelot... perhaps even a Puma or Jaguar.Yes, it is different AT NIGHT!!
